Our head examiner Marc started his working career working for the Military at the Airborne Unit - 44 Parachute Brigade. After his service he joined the world's leading diamond mining company De Beers Marine where he worked 10 years as a Criminal Investigator and Data Analyst. In 2004 he qualified at the American International Institute of Polygraph (AIIP).
He started the company Polygraph Truth Investigations with his father Ian that qualified in 2005. Marc ran the company with other additional examiners until 2021. During Covid Marc moved over to the UK to assist with various programmes. He qualified at PEAK in the USA to conduct tests on Post Conviction Sex Offenders which is a massive government and parole board programme in the UK. He was one of only 3 private examiners in the UK trained and certified to do this testing. He left UK in late 2026 to return to the UK where his farther Ian had been running the business until passing away in 2025. He had done over 13 000 tests by that stage. Marc has done nearly 20 000 tests in his career.
Marc has 2 decades of experience in hearings for companies and CCMA with some ground breaking rulings. He has done over 25 advanced polygraph courses, been to the USA many times for training and worked internationally as a consultant, examiner and trainer.
A polygraph is a diagnostic instrument used by a trained and skilled examiner for the purpose of collecting. measuring and recording selected physiological data obtained from an examinee as he or she answer a series of questions relating to specific issue. This data is then analysed and evaluated.Polygraph test data is a combination of physiological proxies that have been shown to vary significantly in response to different types of test questions as a function of deception and truth telling. Test results are probabilistic descriptions of a margin of uncertainty or level of confidence surrounding a categorical conslusion.The analytic theory of polygraph is that the greater changes in physiological activity are loaded at different types of test stimuli of deception and truth telling in response to relevant target stimuli.The polygraph instrument records data from sensors that measure autonomic and physical activity, including respiration, cardiovascular, electrodermal and somatic activity, in response to the stimulus questions. Several measurable responses have been shown to be statistically correlated with the differences in the strength of responses to lies and truth telling. To determine results a numerical score is assigned to these responses based in a structural model. The result is based on this data indicating either deception or truth telling. A polygraph is for convenience referred to as a lie detector. The test process is as follows:
A private consultation to build rapport, define the specific issue, establish the questions and confirm parameters before any testing begins.
The examiner explains the polygraph procedure, science and accuracy. A statement about the issue at hand is taken. Then reviews all questions with the subject.
Computerised polygraph recording captures cardiovascular, respiratory and electrodermal activity across a controlled question sequence.
Numerical scoring, independent peer review and a written report issued the same day. It may be possible to give a verbal indication of the results to the client after the tests.
We use the world's most advanced digital polygraph system - Lafayette LX6 and OSS computerised scoring software. Our instruments record charts of the examinee which measures breathing cycles, sweat gland activity, pulse rate / blood volume and body movement. Our software and training enable us to detect countermeasure activity.
We also have 2 fully working Stoleting analogue paper and ink systems from the 1970's. We use these for displays, films sets, adverts, media and TV productions. We have helped in UK and Europe for clients such as: The BBS, SkySports, Netflix, Discovery Channel, Arsenal FC, various famous footballers, actors and celebrities, EA Sports, LadBible, The Sidemen, Beta Squad and more.

Here are some of the general questions and enquiries we have regarding the accuracy, reliability and legality of a polygraph test in South Africa. There are many worries that nervousness may effect the test or some medical issue. Polygraph is rated from 95% accurate according to decades of scientific research by the APA. The science is there, but its important that the examiner is trained, skilled, uses the right technique and runs the correct questions and enough charts to gather the required data to score.
What is a polygraph?
A polygraph is a diagnostic instrument used by an examiner for the purpose of collecting, measuring, and recording selected physiological data obtained from an examinee. This data will then be analyzed . Measuring physiological data obtained from the human body, which are controlled by the Autonomic Nervous System:
1) Respiratory System: Respiratory activity patterns and changes;
2) Cardiovascular System: Heart rate, relative blood pressure, blood volume;
3) Electrodermal System: Galvanic skin response, i.e. sweat gland activity.
Will I fail if I am nervous?It is normal for a person to feel nervous. The examiner is trained how to calibrate and make the examinee acquainted with the process and instrument. An acquaintance test is done as the 1st chart prior to running the main questions. Everyone has general nervous tension. As this is throughout the test including the baseline truth and lie questions asked in addition to the relevant questions. We look for certain changes on the relevant questions based on the data of other recorded questions and look for significant reactions, on each relevant questions on every sequence of charts run. Every person that has ever done a test is nervous.
How many questions can be asked?The most accurate technique allows between 2 to 4 relevant questions. The examiner will set these up to cover the issue being tested on. The questions will very very similar in wording and meaning, so as to give the examinee variations of this question to answer across the charts. A guilty person would reasonable react to any and all versions of the question on every chart and the truthful person not react.
Can the results be used in a hearing?
In SA, polygraph results are not treated as stand-alone proof, but they may be considered as part of a wider body of evidence in workplace and labour matters and can be used as balance of probability, breach of trust etc. We have many to hundreds of HR hearings, CCMA, labour court and other procedures defending polygraph results. There is alot of CCMA and case law available on the web.
Can you force someone to do a test? No you cant. However companies can put into their contracts that this is a requirement to pre employment, screening / random or incident related tests, especially if trust is a big part of their job. Refusing to do a test can lead to breach of trust matters. However each company handles HR in their own way so follow those guidelines.
